- Bulldogs draw 1 point

Richmond vs. Manurewa - Grey Lynn park

Premier grade: Richmond proved its dominance in the opening kick off scoring Richmond's first 6 pointers in the first minute to NYC Warriors under 20s centre Francis 'Cess' Leger. Manurewa were fortunate to take an opportunity to kick and receive a lucky bounce of the ball try to level the scores at 6 a piece. However, much of the first half possession and terriroty went the way of the Bulldogs pack who were ahead at the beak 18 to 6. Leading the Bulldogs from the front solidly were Captain Saliga Kepoia and Vae Kalolo. Outwide centre's Leger and Cale Baker exposed many opportunities for easy metres.

With an 18-6 lead in the second half momentum seemed to change in the next stanza of the second half. Richmond lost star centre Francis Leger with a suspected broken neck in an awkward looking tackle from the scrum. With the game moved to field #1 play began however, seconds in to the next set Richmond were down another player with starting prop Sikana breaking his ankle in a hit up. Again moving, the game resumed on field #2 as both Sikana and 'Cess' were taken to hospital. Just as coaches John Teina & Ricky Henry's worries were thought to be put to an end fullback Eroni Ali hurt himself and the home side were now down to 1 reserve bench player less 2 backs and a prop forward.

The home sides defence seemed impenetrable for most of the game however in the last 10 minutes the beating drums of Manurewa's halves to chip over from a scrum play proved vital as Manurewa converted a lucky bounce of the ball try to take the score to 18-12. In the next play Manurewa's halves combined to put through another chip and chase to again score a bounce of the ball converted try to Manurewa levelling the score at 18-18. Richmond out on its feet and struggling were fortunate enough to have prevented Manurewa from drop kicking them in to a 1 point win.

- 20s gun Lafaele’s tries wins Bulldogs 2 valuable points

Lafaele proves 2 (tries) much for Ponies

Richmond fielded a made up team of players from the under 18s, under 20s and senior A grade USO's players.  With cancellations to respective grades this allowed for players to be included in the Premier 1st grade team. Stan Bourke was again a stand out for the home side- also carving the metres was metre eater and under 20s gun prop Hector Purcell who was by far a dominant force breaking the Ponies line at will. The under 20s pairing combination of Ioane Godinet and Lemont Lafaele showed too much class and direction for the outside backs as they both broke the Ponies line with deceptive footwork posting a number of tries including setting up a number  try scoring opportunities for Caine Nahu, Henry Chang-ting and Tyronne Filiva'a

- Vikings feel Bulldog bite

Bulldogs prove too strong for Vikings despite horrific weather conditions

Premier grade:

Richmond put in strong effort against a wailing Vikings team in horrendous playing conditions. Richmond began there Stormont shield contention for 2008 fielding a strong team. The performance was by far a class above its opposition with free flowing play despite the winter conditions. Starting prop and club veteran Vae Kalolo and young gun winger Bradley Watkins had outstanding games. With a tireless centre combination of Wendell Schaumkel and Sosefo Bourke provided much explosive play for Watkins and full back Eroni Ali. Richmond put in a solid performance and came out with some positive displays of defense and attacking play ability to win convincingly 32 to 4. Fullback Eroni Ali had a stand out game as did backs player of the day Bradley Watkins.

Premier 1st: Depleted Bulldogs go down by a converted try

Richmond fielded a young and ever so young team. Players are continually encouraged to attend training on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to bring other interested players to trainings. A 13 man team took the field before kickoff boasting of confident and enthusiastic players including Richmond’s Club chairman Onus Sagapolu and former club captain George Apelu pulling on the maroon and blue to help field a hungry Richmond side. Boasting under 18s players Henry Chang-Tong and Tyrone Filiva’a the Bulldogs were strongly led by prop Jarred Semiti, Stanislaus (Stan) Bourke and stand in captain/prop, Tere Strickland.
Stand off Caine Nahu bumbling the ball twice regained confidence and gave the doggies a confident boost after scoring two quick tries in succession. Final score: 26-32 to the Vikings. Cheers to all the guys who pulled on the Richmond jersey at the last minute. Forwards player of the day: Tere Strickland, Backs player of the day: Caine Nahu

- Richmond determined to make Top 8

Richmond finally climb ladder

Richmond put in a spirited win over lowly placed Bay Roskill Vikings at Bay Roskill reserve. Pushing there claim for a top 8 finish Richmond have pushed into 10th position with 3 remaining games against Otahuhu (home), Papakura (away) and Pakuranga (away). Richmond without many first grade players made many changes to its team for this must win encounter. The fighting determination from the forwards namely Niuvao Taka, Saliga Kepoia and Vae Kalolo allowed Richmond some expansive movement of the ball. Corey Teina stepped up the ante with a much improved attacking game and was solidly supported by full back Isaac Beach. However, a powerful hit from Kepoia on a Vikings player had the ref blowing him off the game for the remainder of the game with 20 minutes to spare. Richmond held on for dare life and beat the homeside 30 to 20 in the last stanza overcoming a late surge from the Vikings.

In the Premier first grade, loose forward Sikana Watkins had a 10/10 performance helping his team with a comfortable win over the Vikings. Lead around the field by Steve Watkins and presenting a number of options for his forwards Ben Faumasili Richmond were the much more dominant team. A standout was second rower Casey Finnerty back from injury.

- Richmond go down fighting!

Bulldogs go down fighting Bears

Premier grade report
Richmond vs Glenora, 2.30pm
Saturday 7th June 2008 - played at Grey Lynn park

Richmond boasted a number of returning NSW Cup Auckland Vulcans and NZ Warriors under 20s players for this much need to win match. Co-coaches Ricky Henry & John Teina were forced to make early interchanges in the first stanza with injuries to fullback Sean Collins (concussion) and interchange prop Charlie Robinson (shoulder). Defence lapses from Richmond allowed the visiting team an early 18-6 half time lead. Second rowers Moses Robinson and Henry Turua provided the team with much needed go-forward and tight ruck play defence.

Half back Pita Godinet, was a standout for a much improved second half Bulldogs team. Richmonds outside backs had plenty of attacking flair with Pita running the show for the Bulldogs pack in which he scored a double with a memoriable individual 70 metre sprint outpacing 3 Bears defenders to score in the corner to put the Bulldogs within reach of the 24-20 lead the bears held. With less than 10 minutes to spare Richmond threw everything it could in desperation of an upset. Glenora showed class and the overall effort the boys had just wasnt enough to beat a determined Bears pack sitting comfortably in 2nd position on the preliminary series ladder. The Bears held off the late revival onslaught from the Bulldogs to win 24-20.

Coach Ricky complimented on the Bears being a team that "showed glimpses of why they were placed 2nd on the ladder" noting also that "they were a team that played for each other".

- 8 Kiwi Ferns from Richmond

RICHMOND dominate NZ Kiwi Ferns team

Reported by Tash Tapu

Hi everyone,

Thought I would update you on the 2008 National Women’s Rugby League Tournament that was held over the weekend. It was a fantastic weekend, with having 6 games over 3 days.  However the injury toll took a battering for some teams and the fittest and smartest ended up on top.  That was once again Auckland A for the 6th year running.

A great tournament was played by ALL our Richmond players, including Sharlene Atai who was in the Auckland invitation team. Last night they announced the Kiwi Ferns for 2008 to play in the world cup starting on the 5th of November 2008.  Once again RICHMOND was a key player in the Auckland team and we have the following representatives:

Tasha Tapu
Lisa Campbell (Rooke)
Sharlene Atai
Fale Chang Ting
Cynthia Ta’ala
Lorina Papili
Annabelle Hohepa
Luisa Avaiki (captain)

- Premiers bowing out

Richmond punished by Lions

31/05/08

Richmond suffered its biggest defeat in recent years at the hands of a well drilled and dominating Fox competition undefeated in 2008 table leaders Mt Albert Lions at Fowlds Park 72-4. Although many tries were scored out wide and on fringes the team will need to win at least 4 out of the 5 remaining games in order to secure a top 8 finish in the Fox Memorial grade. A determined Bulldogs team defended well however fringe play allowed for the Lions back line to expose the Bulldogs defence. Player of the day for the forwards was shared between Moses and Saliga Kepoaia and the backs player of the day went to Corey Teina.
In the Premier 1st grade, Richmond with a changed line up from Thursdays training team loss 32 to 22. Injuries in the first half limited the amount of play available to co-coaches Henry Solomona and George Apelu. Forward player of the day went to under 20s gun prop Hector Purcell and the best back awarded to full back Mohammad Ali.

Richmond shown no mercy against rampant Tigers

24/05/08
